Bob Downing is a central figure in the history of schools’ football in Knowsley and St Helens and one of the most influential volunteers the Association has known. For more than fifty years, he has dedicated his life to providing opportunity, guidance and inspiration for young people through schools’ football, particularly within communities facing significant social and economic challenge.
Bob’s involvement began in 1969 with the Kirkby Schools’ Football Association. At a time when organised sporting opportunities were vital to community life, he recognised the power of schools’ football to offer structure, belonging and aspiration. As a teacher and volunteer, his influence extended well beyond the classroom and the pitch, supporting countless children and families and helping football become a positive and consistent presence in their lives.

As the Association evolved from Kirkby Schools to Kirkby-Knowsley Schools and later to Knowsley Schools’ Football Association, Bob remained at its heart. His leadership, commitment and values helped shape the direction of schools’ football across the borough, ensuring that participation, development and conduct were always prioritised. Across generations, he played a key role in nurturing young players and creating environments in which they could develop both as footballers and as young people.
Throughout his involvement, Bob supported and inspired thousands of children, including several who progressed to the professional game. These include Phil Thompson, Peter Reid, Steven Gerrard, Leighton Baines, Aaron Cresswell, Rickie Lambert and Ryan Taylor, among many others. However, Bob’s legacy is not defined by professional success alone. His greatest impact lies in the countless young people who gained confidence, discipline, teamwork and pride through representing their schools and district.
Bob’s contribution extends far beyond results and honours. It is reflected in decades of commitment, in the standards he set and in the culture of respect and pride that became synonymous with schools’ football in the area. His presence within the Association has influenced not only players but also teachers, coaches and volunteers who continue to build upon the foundations he helped establish.
In recognition of his exceptional service, Bob Downing was appointed Life President of Knowsley St Helens Schools’ Football Association. This honour reflects not only his longevity but the depth of his impact and the esteem in which he is held across the schools’ football community.
Bob Downing represents the values, resilience and community spirit that define schools’ football in Knowsley and St Helens. His legacy continues to inspire those involved today and will remain a guiding influence for future generations.
